This blog was set up to more easily communicate and dialog about the revitalization of the park with the neighborhood stakeholders. Please feel free to comment on entries or even post one yourself.Keelyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431337218274305304noreply@blogger.comBlogger20125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2202453922140750470.post-50537873838351361212008-04-28T10:08:00.000-07:002008-04-28T10:09:31.383-07:00Rummage and Bake Sale ResultsThanks to our wonderful volunteers the Gotham Park Rummage & Bake Sale went off with flying colors. Our grand total was $1119.90. I'm told that the previous highest yard sale total was $850. But best of all, we again engaged the entire community and won some more Gotham Park Stakeholders! If you average $10-$15 per purchase that's somewhere between 75 and 110 shoppers. A good turn out.

The Gotham Park Committee couldn't have done such great help from so many. Special thanks to Jenny Cowhig. She organized the rummage sale, took donations at her home ALL week, arrived for set up before dawn and stayed all day (through the rain)! Also, special thanks to Maria Lyons. She organized the bake sale collecting donations from area bakeries, groceries & neighbors, provided coffee to all the volunteers and manned her station all day (all while mucho pregnant). And to Mary Gail Muse. She purchased dozens of bags and organized a kids' art party to decorate them with Gotham Park and Earth Day messaging for our customers (watch for these to be resurrected at the Fall BBQ). And thanks to all our amazing volunteers: Judy Landey, Kellye McGarry, Bryan McGarry, Wynn Muse, Jean Muse, Jean Johnson, Elaine Murphy, Jane Gole, Greg Wilcox, Steven Mengelt, Irene Seay, Bill Seay, Diane Weber, Shelly Riden, Cathy Conway, Steve Phillips, Susan Kanellos, Laurie Reis, Jonathan Lyons & Geri Laufer. That excludes any of them from being defined as a "neighborhood park." Neighborhood parks are typically defined as being within "walking distance" which is itself, is defined a as one quarter mile. None of the parks are within one quarter mile and none are particularly walkable as either Piedmont Rd or Monroe Dr-- both very busy streets-- must be crossed to gain access any and all of these parks.

Keelyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431337218274305304noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2202453922140750470.post-38937214179309704132008-01-13T18:21:00.000-08:002008-01-14T14:39:32.925-08:00Gotham Park Committee Gets Back to WorkAfter a short time-out during the holidays the Gotham Park Committee reconvened today to continue our efforts to renovate Gotham Park. The grant is part of their Community Grants Program which we applied for in October. Read the Award Letter.

The matching funds for this grant come from those raised at the Gotham Park BBQ in September. At that meeting each committee presented a report of their efforts and goals for 2007. Gotham Park did the same. If you were not able to make the meeting please read the report.

2007 has been a great year for Gotham Park. It's been a year of momentum building, alliance making, and fundraising. It requires a concerted effort on the part of many people to revitalize a common space like Gotham Park and we well on our way! In late 2006, Gotham Park entered into a fiscal partnership with Park Pride. This allows us to accept tax-deductible donations. A crucial step in the fundraising process. Gotham Park started the year with just over $700 in the bank; we end the year with almost $55,000 and growing! The rest of 2007 will be spent gathering the information we need for a Gotham Park master plan-- obtaining cost estimations, establishing a phased schedule for construction and implementation, collecting bids, and determining our fundraising goals for 2008.

2008 will be another year of strategy and fundraising-- but more exciting, 2008 will be a year of implementation! You will really start to see the funds we've raised being invested into Gotham Park. My personal goal is to celebrate my daughter's fourth birthday in a park complete with attractive landscaping, improved entrances and paths, an activity lawn, park benches, picnic tables, and maybe, just maybe, a full playground installation.

Please stay in touch with the Gotham Park Committee and our efforts. Ruppert Nursery is installing the new WXIA landscaping and subsequently is installing the adjacent Gotham Way Park landscaping.
After our meeting, it occurred to me that I am concerned about planting large specimens, especially during a Level 4 drought. I would like to go on record as saying smaller trees take root and grow much more easily than larger ones, they require less water to get started, they cost less individually, and the little ones eventually catch up and then surpass the larger ones in size (it may take 6-10 years, but eventually they do) . However, they do not provide the "instant screening" like the larger ones do (unless they dry out in the drought and die, then they wouldnt provide any screening).
Further, I recommend that Rupert include native holly, native Southern magnolia, native Florida anisebush and other tough, broad-leaf, evergreen, native plants for the Gotham Way Park planting list.
An aside:
Daffodils are not native, but they are tough and squirrels and chipmunks don't eat them b/c they are poisonous. Envision a "host of golden daffodils" on the big hillside! It would look great after the steps or switchback path is in.

GardenGerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00150821551711045605noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2202453922140750470.post-18459481196182236872007-11-02T10:21:00.000-07:002008-01-14T14:37:50.434-08:00Piedmont Heights called "trendy neighborhood"In today's AJC Metro Section in a story by Paul Donsky, Piedmont Heights was included on the map of the Beltline touching trendy neighborhoods. It was to be our last meeting before meeting with the landscape architects and the playground consultants. The advice given to me by Park Pride was: when visioning for your park shoot for the moon and you'll land somewhere on earth. So that's what we did. Our (amateur) master plan draft includes a nice long list of wonderful amenities.

A big part of the evening was analyzing the results of a stakeholders meeting that was held in August. At that meeting all neighbors were invited to view the design draft and make comments, suggestions (about 35 showed up). That was followed by a dot voting exercise in which the stake holders received four dots. Two dots were for amenities they much favored or prioritized and two dots were for amenities they did not care for or did not feel were priorities. Frankly, there was nothing too surprising in the results except that zero people wanted a basketball half-court and 13 did not! Click here to see the complete results of that meeting.

Come back to see the latest design draft that reflects the stakeholders meeting results and last nights meeting. I'm in the middle of drafting it now.

The meeting with the landscape architect and playground consultants is scheduled for this Friday. So, lots of great news to come!

Keelyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431337218274305304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2202453922140750470.post-63821070306993392872007-10-20T13:10:00.000-07:002008-01-14T14:37:16.178-08:00It Takes a Village, Part DeuxThe final tally of the Sept 23rd Gotham Park BBQ and Fundraiser keeps growing. Someone, not on the Gotham Park Committee saw a way they could help and stepped right up and did the job! Baron Jordan, VP of the Piedmont Heights Civic Association Board, made an application to the Park Pride Community Micro Grant Program on behalf of Gotham Park. What a guy!

The deadline was October 15-- just a few days away. I was out of town and not answering email or voicemail so Baron took on the mantle of leadership that he so often does and wrote the application himself. There was some thought that an application might be made for the fledgling Piedmont Heights Green Space Committee but b/c there was a requirement of matching funds so Gotham Park was selected. Our matching funds will come from the Sept Gotham Park BBQ and Fundraiser. Yet another positive repercussion of the fantastic BBQ event.

NPU-F sponsored the application for $500 for the installation of a sandbox/covered pavilion. You can read the complete application. Recipients of the grants will be notified by Nov 1. We'll be sure to post the results here and on our website.

Either way, next time you see Baron please give him a huge thanks on behalf of all Gotham Park Stakeholders!!

Keelyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431337218274305304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2202453922140750470.post-91572010785906144202007-10-20T11:36:00.001-07:002008-01-14T14:37:02.488-08:00Why a Blog?I created this blog to help communicate and dialog about the revitalization of Gotham Park.

The park belongs to the residents of Piedmont Heights. The City of Atlanta does not own the park, we do. This is a common place for all to read blog entries by the Gotham Park Committee, make comments, view pictures and designs, and learn about all new developments with the park. Check back often.

Keelyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431337218274305304noreply@blogger.com0
